Theosophy against Racism
(Written in private Nov. 7th 2002 by Morten Nymann)

During several centuries there has been clashes between cultures on this planet called Earth. On our Earth there has been people living with different colours of skin. Differences as such has for years divided people into different groupings. If people "belonged" to a certain kind of skin-colour they thought they were sort of among equals when they came across one with the same colour.
Today in our informations society with fast transportation aeroplanes, cars etc. we have the present day cultures clashing with their differences so to speak. Yes. There are still a lot of poor people on this planet. But anyway that is what is going on at the moment.
Because of these cultural exchanges and the fast transportation etc. the differences between cultures become more and more visible.

Theosophy are also called The Ancient Wisdom teaching of all ages past. Some theosophical groupings are today to a certain degree building their teaching on the books written by woman called H. P. Blavatsky (d.1891). The one who wrote the famous book called The Secret Doctrine and other important books on the Ancient Wisdom Teachings.

Sometimes books and scriptures on the Ancient Wisdoms Teaching were made to a certain group of people or a certain audience. They were made at a certain time and place in history. The use of words and their meaning at that time was one and at another time it will be different or is different.
One could say, that almost anything written in for instance the 1800's or even earlier would be colored by the culture of the time. Popular prejudices and misconceptions would be ingrained in the language, writing, and manner of speech that people used then. From a different standpoint, we can look back and see things of which the people of the time may not have been aware.
If someone today reads an older book, the biases of its time will show up. It is not particular to true theosophical books. If we want something to appear as unbiased, we need to write something new that communicates the philosophy in modern terms. Even with that, later generations will look back on anything that we write in the 2000's as being biased in ways we do not currently realize, just as we do so upon the writings of for instance the 1800's.

The use of words in various theosophical scriptures - and especially those of H. P. Blavatsky - those words like 'races', 'root-races' etc. had a different meaning at the time of writing than they have today. Then it was quite common to be a racist in United Kingdom, Germany or another country. So to make scriptures attractive and giving to people at that time one would have to use a certain vocabulary - and veiling the teaching of wisdom. The use of the word or term "race" or "root-race" refers in the book "The Secret Doctrine" by H. P. Blavatsky obviously to a karmical konditioned group of people, and not necessarily to the color of their skin or the culture they lived in or live in, and neither which religion they have or had. This seem pretty clear when reading the following pages: Secret Doctrine Vol. II, p. 130, 200, 248-250, and 471. Especially p. 249 footnote.
We also have to remember, that Blavatsky only promised that her book The Secret Doctrine would last for about a 100 years - and then better books or scriptures would surface.  the question is when they will come? Because we are now about 14 years past that date.

And when this is said, we also will have to remember, that Theosophy as such has - no - i.e. NO Bibles at all. To think so is to misunderstand what Theosophy represents. There are really no main books to read. Each group are free to chose their own - main - books if any at all. The importance is here, that if any main books are chosen - then they should be following the Wisdom Teaching of all ages past.
The various groups often makes certain, that they at least are not in any real opposition to the famous book The secret Doctrine. But as we have seen, that book is slowly getting older and older.

It is very important that one understand, that Theosophy is a teaching AGAINST racism and all what it covers. But even so Theosophy as such has to relate to the reality on this Planet. The reality is, that some people are born with one colour of skin and other people with another. And that there is a certain reason for that.
And because of this they to a certain degree - even today year 2002 -  have a different background to develop - spiritually from. The importance of this physical issue will quickly vanish because of our present informations society - with fast transportation and fast communication. (At 1888 the picture was different than today).
But as time goes by the physical part of us - the humans - will be of lesser importance. The importance will then be, as it also already is now, on the character of the individual - and its patterns of emotional reactions and mental behaviour, the so-called Kama-Manas.
The use of one or more of the so-called 7 keys (as mentioned by H. P. Blavatsky in her book The Secret Doctrine) was necessary to use, to a certain degree, so to make the books more living and giving to the audience at that time. For more on that and Theosophy try this link : The book "The Key to Theosophy" written by H. P. Blavatsky. (I have NO special connections to The Theosophical Society Pasadena - except that they have this book online to read for free.)

If the theosophical groups was making a stronger effort on the issue of putting "racism" down and a stronger effort on the importance of  a "global culturally unbiased perspective" for the theosophical newcomers - then that could make Theosophy a more relevant and even a very important "player" on the Planet.

As it is now. Theosophy as such has some problems, which has to be dealt with - rather sooner than later.

Now let me suggest first that if we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather that sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective. No individual can live alone; no nation can live alone, and as long as we try, the more we are going to have war in this world. Now the judgement of Karma or ParaBrahman is upon us, and we must either learn to live together as brothers or we are all going to perish together as fools.

And what goes for an individual and a nation, that also goes for Theosophical groups ("tribes") and organizations with their nit-pickings and small-talks about other theosophical groups!

Those groups who do not HONESTLY and OPENLY relate to the above must be declared for NON-theosophical at best.

There are certainly today a number of Theosophical groups or offshoots of groups, which do not for REAL follow this kind of line of Communication and Teaching. Let them be aware of the TRUTH about what they are doing. Let them transcend their tribe. Let them transcend their cultural bias. Let then transcend their religious bias and local perspective of the world.
